Electrician invoice template: UK examples

An electrician invoice should identify the property, describe the electrical work, state the supply date and make any certificate or report easy to match. A landlord, homeowner and main contractor may all need different supporting details.

Use the template below for domestic work, testing, installations or subcontract packages. Delete any fields that do not apply.

Government guidance lists the core information every UK invoice must include. The job and certificate references above are practical additions that help your customer match the bill to the work.

Domestic electrical invoice example

A homeowner has a replacement consumer unit, testing and minor remedial work.

The site address is printed even if it matches the customer’s home address. The certificate reference appears on the invoice and the certificate itself is attached to the email.

“Consumer unit replacement” is better than “electrical work”, but the first line is better again: it tells the customer what was removed, installed and completed.

EICR invoice example for a landlord or agent

For an inspection, identify the property and report separately. Do not make the letting agent guess which flat the invoice belongs to.

Include:

• property address
• inspection date
• report reference
• agent’s property or landlord code
• agreed remedial work as separate lines
• the report as an email attachment

If you manage a regular portfolio, recurring invoices can raise the same testing charge on the stated date. Keep one-off remedial work on a separate invoice or clearly separate line.

Quote larger electrical work first

A rewire, EV charger or multi-board upgrade needs a defined scope before the invoice.

The quote should state:

• number and type of points
• accessories or finish
• board and protection specification
• whether making good or decoration is included
• testing and certification
• access assumptions
• deposit and payment stages
• excluded upgrade work

Deposits and stages for rewires and equipment

A materials deposit can cover equipment ordered before the job starts. A full rewire may be split into booking, first fix, second fix and completion.

State whether the deposit is part of the total. The remaining stages must add back to the agreed price.

When CIS applies to an electrician

Electrical installation can fall within CIS when it forms part of construction work and the parties are contractor and subcontractor under the scheme. Domestic work invoiced directly to a homeowner is not treated as a CIS subcontract invoice merely because an electrician did the work.

The contractor verifies the subcontractor and applies the HMRC result. Split labour from materials so the deduction base can be checked.

Check the VAT domestic reverse charge

The VAT domestic reverse charge may apply to covered construction services between VAT-registered businesses where the customer is not an end user or intermediary supplier. It does not apply to every electrical job.

Check HMRC’s reverse-charge guidance. When it applies, the invoice makes clear that the customer accounts for the VAT; the supplier does not add the reverse-charge VAT to the amount they collect.

Keep it separate from CIS:

• CIS deduction is calculated on the appropriate labour amount
• reverse-charge VAT is calculated on the taxable supply
• the invoice should display both clearly

What to attach to the invoice email

Depending on the job, attach:

• EIC, EICR or minor works certificate
• test results or schedule
• photographs requested by the customer
• signed daywork sheet
• approved variation
• equipment warranty
• purchase order or valuation support for subcontract work

Put the certificate or report reference on the invoice and use the same reference in the filename. The document remains separate from the invoice PDF but travels in the same email.

Electrician invoice check before sending

• Is the legal customer correct: homeowner, agent, landlord or contractor?
• Is the work-site address shown?
• Are invoice and supply dates present?
• Does the description identify the work rather than say “electrics”?
• Is the certificate or report reference included?
• Are labour and materials separate where CIS applies?
• Is the VAT treatment correct for this customer?
• Does the due date match the agreed term?
• Are the promised documents attached?
• Do the gross total, deduction and amount due add up?
